Lange’s Commentary on the Holy Scriptures has served as a standard reference for more than a century. The subtitle “Critical, Doctrinal, and Homiletical” aptly describes the three-pronged approach to the biblical text. Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, on the left bank of the Tigris, is called the great city, κατ̓ ἐξοχήν, here as in Gen. 10:12, where the additional clause, “the same is a great city,” includes the four previously, separately named cities, which, in a wider sense, constituted the city of Nineveh.
